Julius Shapiro
Director
Julius was raised in Chicago, Illinois. He
attended the University of Illinois where he received a B.S. in
Accounting in 1955. In 1958, Julius received a J.D. from
Northwestern School of Law and began practice in 1959 after a
six (6) month military service.
Since joining Berger, Newmark & Fenchel P.C.,
in December, 1961 Julius has chaired the firm's Corporate, Real
Estate and Banking Groups and today serves as chair of the
Construction Group of the firm. In 1968, Julius was elected
Director of Berger, Newmark & Fenchel P.C., which
Directorship he still holds. In 1982, Julius was elected
Co-Trustee of the Berger, Newmark & Fenchel P.C. Profit Sharing
Trust, a position he still maintains and in 1989 he was elected
President of the firm and held office until December 2005 when
he was elected Chairman of the Board which chairmanship he still
holds.
Julius' area of practice includes corporate,
banking and construction law and he has written chapters in the
Illinois Construction and Mechanics Lien handbooks for close to
twenty (20) years. Julius is the Chairman of the Mechanics Lien
Subcommittee that revised the Mechanic Lien Act and is proposing
legislation to the public portion of the Act. He has been a
member of the subcommittee since the 1980's. He has chaired the
Chicago Bar Continuing Legal Edition Committee, Mechanics Lien
Subcommittee, being invited and has joined a non-for-profit
society for construction law, and has been an annual lecturer at
the Mechanic Lien Seminar sponsored by the Chicago Bar. He has
lectured for the Illinois State Bar on Mechanics Lien and
construction matters as well as various associations including
the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association, where
he serves on the Budget and Educational Committees, and the
American Subcontractors Association. In addition to the above,
Julius has authored numerous articles on construction published
in trade journals.
Julius has served on various charitable and
religious boards in the capacity of trustee, director and
officer. Julius and his wife, Sherry, spend most of their free
time traveling and visiting with their children and
grandchildren. Sherry is a former teacher of photography in the
evening school of the Art Institute and is currently involved in
writing short stories.
