Thomas W. Murphy
Thomas Murphy is of counsel to the law firm of
Berger, Newmark & Fenchel, P.C. Tom has a broad-based commercial
and business law practice representing publicly owned and
private companies, banks and other entities, including religious
and educational institutions. He also handles a wide range of
real estate matters, including leasing, sales, acquisitions and
other dispositions relating to commercial and industrial
properties. Tom has represented banks and financial institutions
in complex loan transactions, real estate acquisitions,
development and construction loans and asset-based loans. Tom
has represented both real estate entrepreneurs and developers
with respect to the purchase, sale, acquisition and leasing of
real estate projects. He has also provided legal counsel to his
clients on a wide variety of corporate and commercial issues.
Tom is also a member of the Firm’s Labor & Employment practice
group, and he has had extensive experience representing
employers before the EEOC, Department of Labor and the Human
Rights Commissions in a number of different states throughout
the United States. Tom has handled a variety of employment and
discrimination cases, and he also counsels his clients on
various aspects of state and federal civil rights legislation.
Tom has also presented seminars on labor and employment issues
for management personnel of his clients.
Tom has been a speaker on the National
Association of Realtors’ Radio Program, "On the Homefront" and
was a legal editorial consultant to the National Association of
Realtors’ Journal, of Property Management. He was a member of
the Board of Directors of Colonial Bank from 1988 through 1994,
for which he received the "Director of Year Award" for 1988,
1989, 1990 and 1991. Tom was also a member of the Board of
Directors of Archbishop Weber High School, Chicago, Illinois,
from 1998 until 2000, when the school closed, Resurrection
Retreat Center from 2002 until 2009, when it closed, and he is
currently a Trustee of the Weber Endowment Foundation, a member
of the Board of Directors of Gordon Tech High School from 2003
to the present and Interim President of Gordon Tech High School
from August, 209 to October, 2009. Tom was also an instructor at
The John Marshall Law School from 1980 through 1985.
Tom holds a B.S.B.A. degree in accounting
from Georgetown University and received his J.D. degree, with
distinction, from The John Marshall Law School in 1977. He was
admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1977, the U.S. District Court,
Northern District of Illinois in 1978, the U.S. Tax Court and
U.S. Claims Court, New York, in 1984. He is a member of the
Illinois State, New York State and American Bar Associations.
His clients include Prospect Airport
Services, Congregation of the Resurrection, Gordon Tech High
School and a number of real estate developers.
